Kampala Capital City Authority has renewed its partnership with the Buganda Kingdom by contributing Shs5 million and mobilising staff participation in the Kabaka Birthday Run, reinforcing efforts to combat HIV/Aids and promote urban health awareness.

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has contributed Shs5 million towards this year’s Kabaka Birthday Run, strengthening its long-standing partnership with the Buganda Kingdom in the fight against HIV/Aids and other urban health challenges.

A delegation from KCCA, led by Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi, on Friday paid a courtesy visit to the Kingdom headquarters at Bulange, Mengo, where they also procured running kits for staff members who will participate in the run, underscoring both institutional backing and personal involvement in the campaign.

The Kabaka Birthday Run, organised in honour of Ronald Mwenda Mutebi II, is scheduled to take place on April 12 at Lubiri, Mengo, a day before the monarch’s 71st birthday.

Now in its 13th year, the event has grown into one of Uganda’s largest public health awareness campaigns, attracting over 130,000 participants annually.

This year’s theme, “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child and the Fight to End HIV/Aids by 2030,” highlights the critical role of men in reducing HIV transmission and promoting healthier communities.

Speaking during the visit, Kigenyi praised the Buganda Kingdom for consistently leveraging cultural platforms to advance public health messaging.

“Our collaboration with Buganda Kingdom reflects a shared commitment to improving public health outcomes. Beyond HIV/Aids, this partnership addresses broader urban health challenges, from sanitation to community awareness, contributing to a safer Kampala,” he said.

In his remarks, the Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, delivered a strong message on personal responsibility in the fight against HIV/Aids, urging men to take a leading role in prevention efforts.

“It should be the men to save the women,” he said, emphasizing the importance of testing and responsible behaviour.

Mayiga further encouraged women and young girls to prioritise their health and insist on HIV testing in relationships, regardless of financial dependence.

“Even if he pays your rent, ask him to test. If he refuses, make a decision that protects your life,” he said.

He also reiterated key prevention measures, including regular testing, adherence to treatment, abstinence, and mutual faithfulness, while urging the public to purchase running kits and participate in large numbers.

Over the years, the Kabaka Birthday Run has evolved from a ceremonial celebration into a major national advocacy platform, uniting government institutions, cultural leaders, and the public in the shared goal of ending HIV/Aids in Uganda by 2030.
